If your old computer can’t run anything above Windows XP / 7 give it a new life with Linux.

Linux distribution comes in different flavours. One among them suitable for low end hardware is “Lubuntu”.

The screen shot of Lubuntu LXQT desktop is given below. This looks similar to WindowsXP.

By default “Lubuntu” is installed with essential softwares like word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, music & video player, Internet browser etc.

The following configuration was used for testing Lubuntu 22.04.

Hardware used:
Processor: Intel 3.54 GHz Dual Core
RAM: 4 GB
Hard disk: 250 GB
and without graphics card.

Software used:
Firefox web browser with YouTube website live streaming video playing in 720p resolution in full screen monitor of 1280 by 1024.

Resource usage:
CPU: 60%
RAM: 1.7 GB
Internet: 260 KB/s

The resource usage chart is given below.

Observations:
This hardware performs well for 720p video. However the CPU is struggling to play video at 1080p. Other basic software will use less resources.

Graphic intensive software will require a dedicated graphics card.
